Taylor Gregg has been active in sailing since his college days when he competed in the “Big Ten” as “A Division” skipper for Ohio State University. He was Fleet Captain, and taught sailing at Ohio State, while racing against teams such as Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Indiana, Wisconsin, Northwestern, and others in the Mid-Western Intercollegiate Sailing Association. The Buckeye team of Great Lakes sailors often enjoyed coming east to challenge Georgetown, the Naval Academy, and other schools of the Middle-Atlantic Intercollegiate Division, or to the southeast to race at Georgia Tech against SE region schools. The Buckeye sailors did not always win, but were rarely out of the top three places in collegiate regattas.

In later years he served as head coach of sailing at Georgetown University and also led bareboat charters in the Greek Islands.

After duty in the U.S. Navy (NAVSECGRU) in the South Pacific and Japan, Coach Gregg became a newspaper and magazine editor, and later a National Geographic Magazine Editor and Asia Specialist. He has taught photography as an Adjunct Professor at George Washington University, American University, and St. Mary’s College, and currently teaches digital photography for St. Mary’s County Recreation & Parks. This year will mark his seventh season as Director of the St. Mary’s Ryken Sailing Program.

Sailing is a two-season sport at St. Mary’s Ryken. The SMR Sailing Club teaches sailing to new sailors on campus Tuesdays & Thursdays after school. The Varsity and JV teams practice 5 days a week after school on campus. Special practices for the team are held on Fridays at St. Mary’s College with their national champion varsity team, coached by Adam Werblow.
